Start A Blog: Define Your Goals And Make Them Happen. Blogging is a lot of fun, but it also takes work. It’s important to set goals for yourself when blogging, because you always want to be working towards something, but not all at once. Setting time oriented achievements for yourself when blogging helps to streamline your focus and efforts, so you’re making the most of your time. Here’s how to make sure you reach the bars you set.

Set Yearly Goals

Once you have an idea of what you want your blog to be and where you want to take it, it’s time to start looking at yearly achievements. Your first year blogging is going to be mainly getting set up, and you’ll spend the consecutive years building your blog and working towards your long term ambitions.

Your first year goals might look like this:

  • Fully develop web design
  • Write 1 post per day to build content
  • Submit to blog directories and carnivals
  • Submit to social media sites
Your second year goals might look like this:
  • Publish 1 e book
  • Gain 5,000 email subscribers
  • Gain 2,500 Facebook Fans & Twitter Followers
  • Monetize blog

Start With Long Term Goals

When thinking about what achievements you want your blog to have, it’s easier to start with the long term goals and work your way down into the smaller monthly, weekly and daily goals. This is essentially because your daily and weekly ambitions should be smaller stepping stones to your long term goals. Take some time to brainstorm what you ultimately want to do with your blog. Don’t put a time limit on these achievements – instead, make them “this is what my blog will be when I consider it to be successful” achievements.

For example, a long term goal list for a blog might look like this:

  • Earn $5,000 per month with my blog
  • Have 5,000 Twitter Followers
  • Have 5,000 Facebook Fans
  • Have 15,000 Email List Subscribers
  • Publish 2 Blog Related E Books
  • Have 1 million unique visitors per day
Your long term goals can be as big or as small as you want them to be, but don’t sell yourself short because you think it’s something you can’t achieve, or is out of your reach. Something is only out of your reach if you put it there! If you want 5,000 Twitter followers, don’t say you only want 2,500 because you think that number is more realistic. Never, ever sell yourself short. Ever!

Set Monthly Goals

Your monthly achievements are next, and should be smaller stepping stones to your yearly ambitions. Think of what you can do on a monthly basis to help achieve what you want for the year. For example, if one of your yearly ambitions is to publish an e book, think of how much you need to write and what else you need to do on a monthly basis to have it finished in one year. If you want to publish a 60 page e book, consider writing 5 pages per month.

Another example would be brainstorming how you could reach your goal of getting 2,500 Facebook fans and Twitter followers. Could you run a social media contest each month? As for site revenue, each month you could research a new way to monetize your blog and either implement it or replace an existing monetization method with the new one.

Set Weekly Goals

Your weekly achievements are even smaller versions of your monthly goals, but they still point you in the direction you want to go. Think of what you can do on a weekly basis that will take you to your monthly ambitions.

For example, you might send one email of your blog’s best articles or posts of the week to your email list subscribers. Put an advertisement on the home page of your blog that says “Sign up for the best tips each week!” or something similar. You might also consider submitting to one blog directory or carnival each week. Look at what your monthly goals are, and figure out what you need to do each week to help make that happen. Be consistent and do what you need to do every week – don’t let yourself get behind!

Set Daily Goals

When you sit down to start blogging each day, it’s essential to know what you’re going to do for the day and where you want to be at the end of the day. Of course you can sit down and just start blogging, but if you do that, you might not be focusing your efforts in the right place. Your daily ambitions should take you closer to your weekly ambitions, your monthly ones and your long term ones. They should be smaller steps that will gently guide you to the larger achievements you want to make.

Your daily goal list might look something like this:

  • Write 1 blog post per day
  • Post to social media websites once per day

Review Your Goals Each Day, Week, Month & Year

The idea is to be working towards all of your goals together, but not worrying about everything all at once. If you know you’re going to submit to a blog directory once per week and that will help you reach your traffic goals for the year, you know you only have to deal with that once a week, instead of waking up every day and wondering if you should submit to a directory today or tomorrow or the next day, and wondering when you last did it.

If you’re monetizing your blog each month, you only have to worry about it once a month, and a month’s time is enough to determine whether the method you’ve chosen is working or needs to be replaced with a better method.

Spend time reviewing your ambitions for the day each day, for the week each week and for the month each month and for the year each year. Every year also spend time thinking about your overall long term ambitions. Don’t be afraid to change your goals and modify them to suit what you want to do and where you are at the moment. Change equals growth.
